“Let choice whisper in your ear and love murmur in your heart. Be ready. Here comes life.”

—Maya Angelou

Hello! I'm Chelsie Duckworth, Owner and Doula behind Birth Space KC.

I have carried a passion for reproductive justice in my heart for as long as I can remember.  It led me to a dual B.A. in Women, Gender, and Sexuality studies and Spanish and to so many wonderful organizations and individuals that I will forever be grateful for knowing. What brought me to birth & postpartum work was my own experience with doulas. These amazing women supported me through both of my births with their evidence-based knowledge, their comforting touch, their constant encouragement, and reassurance. They made all the difference for me and my husband and I knew I wanted to be that compassionate support for others.

This work requires a lot of creativity and connection. What it means to have a successful, positive birth varies with every single family. As a doula and educator, I love helping clients explore their own beliefs about birth and discover what they really hope for in their own experience. We work together to create an environment that will leave them feeling connected to their journey, to their partners, and to baby. At each birth, regardless of any plan changes made along the way, there is a special opportunity to bring a new life and a new identity into a space that is filled with compassion, love, and respect.

Are you worried about feeling unheard in your birth?  Feeling unsure about the decisions that may need to be made?  Are you wondering how you are going to cope with labor or if the goals you hope for are attainable?

As your birth doula, I hold the space for you and your loved ones, making sure that you feel confident in your choices, that you are supported, and that your experience leaves you feeling strong and connected. My clients have described my doula style as a quiet and nurturing force, providing encouragement and peace and grounding them in their birth experience.

Everyone has the right to a safe, healthy, satisfying birth

Not sure how they just let you walk out of the hospital with your tiny new creature?  Feeling overwhelmed by the daily tasks of parenting? Do you wish you could wake up one morning rested, with your laundry folded, house tidy, and hot coffee waiting?

As a postpartum doula, I help to ease the transition into a new family structure. Parents may not always know what support they need as they start a new life with baby, only that they wish they had someone there to answer questions, be an extra set of hands, or make them a pot of coffee in the morning. I provide evidence-based information, share tips and tricks for how to manage questions or concerns that arise and support new parents through the emotional journey of newborn care. I act as a resource for each member, making sure that families can move forward smoothly and confidently in their recovery and bonding with baby.

I support all births and families: VBAC, cesareans, multiples, medicated births, unmedicated births, couples, LGBTQIA families, co-parents, adoptive parents, single parents, teens, etc...
